Music 113 - Aural Skills II

January 20 - February 5
- Get acquainted; organizational.
- Melodic and harmonic intervals: within one octave
- Triads: inversions
- Melodic dictation: few chromatic sounds; binary divisions and triplets
- Rhythmic exercises: eight notes, sixteenth, and syncopations
- Berkowitz: 49-54
February 6: MacGamut Assignment 1 due
February 9 - 12
- Melodic and harmonic intervals: simple and compound including the 12th.
- Chords: non-dominant 7ths and inversions: minor-minor, minor-major,
major-major; where can they be found in major and various minor scales.
- Chord progressions: N6, secondary dominants; diatonic modulation, modulations
with N6.
- Melodic dictation:
- Rhythmic dictation: binary and ternary divisions including sextuplets
- Berkowitz: 55-57
February 11/12 Singing Test
February 16 - 26
- Melodic and harmonic intervals: simple and compound within 2 octaves
- Chords: augmented 6th and inversions.
- Chord progressions: N6, augmented 6th, modulations with these chords.
- Melodic dictation: including 2 part dictation
- Rhythmic dictation: sextuplets, syncopations, 32nds.
- Berkowitz: 58-63
February 18/19: Singing Test
February 20: MacGamut Assignment 2 due
February 25/26: Singing Test
February 26 - FIRST DICTATION QUIZ
March 1 - 4
- Melodic and harmonic intervals: same as above; from now on the student's
responsibility
- Chords: dominant chords with major and minor 9th; incomplete 9th chords;
"fully diminished" chords and "1/2 diminished" chords; inversions.
- Rhythmic dictation: quintuplets
- Berkowitz: 64-66
March 5: MacGamut Assignment 3 due
March 8 - 18
- Chords: Raised II and raised VI and inversions; enharmonic spellings.
- Chord progressions: II+ and VI+; enharmonic modulations.
- Melodic dictation: including 2 and 3 voices examples
- Rhythmic dictation: compound meter

The content of each module reflects the materials which need to be
prepared by the respective deadline. Since it might not be possible to cover
everything in class due to obvious time limitations, it is each student's
responsibility to practice individually those materials. The instructor and
the graduate assistants will provide guidance but their assistance can not
replace the personal effort of each individual student.
