ANALYSIS OF MUSICAL FORM

(first half of the 20th. century)

Summer 2017


This course will cover the historical period between 1900 and World War II. It will focus on the formal structure of representative compositions in relation to their musical language and it will include five major units:

  1. The demise of tonality
  2. Constructive devices: Rhythm
  3. Non-tonal centricity - Modes
  4. Constructive devices: Timbre
  5. Atonal systems

There will be three assignments, three listening test, and a comprehensive final. There will also be a number of reading assignments to be discussed in class. Participation in the discussions will be taken into consideration in determining the final grade.
